The promise
Free education, free health care, full employment and rural integration — the Unity Party of Nigeria platform Onabanjo ran on in 1979.
Assessment
His government abolished school fees, expanded schools and health facilities and invested in rural roads and water, in line with the UPN programme also pursued in Lagos, Oyo, Ondo and Bendel. Detailed, sourced outcome figures for Ogun over 1979–1983 are limited in the summary record.
Kept
The promise
To give Ogun State its own university.
Assessment
Ogun State University was founded at Ago-Iwoye in 1982 during his term. It was renamed Olabisi Onabanjo University in his honour in 2001.
Broken
The promise
Implicit in his 1979 election and 1983 re-election as governor on the UPN platform.
Assessment
Onabanjo was re-elected in 1983 and removed by the 31 December 1983 coup. He was tried by a Buhari-era military tribunal and jailed for corruption; released on health grounds, he died in 1990. Ogun's main airport road and its state university carry his name.
