Ngige took over an Anambra State that had gone through years of unpaid salaries, long strikes, vigilante violence and institutional collapse under Chinwoke Mbadinuju.

Recovery was overwhelmed almost immediately by the 2003 godfather crisis; the state did not stabilise before Ngige was removed in 2006.
