Barnabas Igwe, chairman of the Onitsha branch of the Nigerian Bar Association and a vocal critic of the Mbadinuju administration over unpaid salaries and alleged embezzlement, was murdered together with his pregnant wife Amaka on 1 September 2002 in Onitsha by militia men.
Outcome / Status
The killings were widely linked to Igwe's opposition to the administration. No one was convicted, and the case became a symbol of the political violence of the Anambra crisis years.
