The problem
Kwara politics from 1999 ran through the patronage network of Olusola Saraki, whose endorsement had put Lawal in office and whose withdrawal could remove him.
What was done
When Saraki switched his support to his son Bukola for 2003, Lawal's re-election collapsed and the governorship passed directly to the Saraki family, which held it until 2019.
