Kaduna entered the Fourth Republic split almost evenly between Muslim north and Christian south, with the question of adopting Sharia law an immediate flashpoint after 1999.

The 2000 riots were among the deadliest of the era; the eventual majority-Muslim-areas compromise contained the crisis but the underlying division persisted and flared again in later years.
