The old Plateau State combined present-day Plateau and Nasarawa, a religiously and ethnically mixed population spread across the Jos plateau and surrounding lowlands with thin road and school coverage outside the main towns.

The administration pushed infrastructure into rural areas, but the term was ended by the military after four years.
