Allegation
The EFCC alleged that about ₦7.65 billion of Abia State money was moved during the term to companies connected to Kalu, chiefly Slok Nigeria Limited, and charged him after he left office.
Outcome / Status
Kalu was convicted on 5 December 2019 and sentenced to 12 years. On 8 May 2020 the Supreme Court nullified the conviction, holding that the trial judge had improperly continued the case after elevation to the Court of Appeal, and ordered a retrial. Kalu was released on 3 June 2020; the retrial has not concluded.
Administration's response
A rare conviction of a former governor was undone on a procedural point, and the retrial stalled — leaving the underlying allegations untested.
