Allegation
The EFCC alleged that about ₦7.65 billion of Abia State money was moved during the term to companies connected to Kalu, chiefly Slok Nigeria Limited, and charged him after he left office.
Outcome / Status
Kalu was convicted on 5 December 2019 and sentenced to 12 years. On 8 May 2020 the Supreme Court nullified the conviction because the trial judge had been elevated to the Court of Appeal before delivering judgment, and Kalu was released on 3 June 2020. The Federal Government sought a retrial, but on 29 September 2021 Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court, Abuja, barred it, holding that the Supreme Court had not ordered one. The EFCC's appeal failed in March 2024, when the Court of Appeal, Abuja, dismissed it on procedural grounds, finding the record of appeal incompetent and unreliable. No retrial has been reported.
