The '53 suitcases' affair
OngoingAbandoned
Allegation
On 10 June 1984, 53 suitcases were brought in through Murtala Muhammed Airport by the Emir of Gwandu — whose son was Buhari's aide-de-camp — and cleared without customs inspection on the returning flight from Saudi Arabia, in a regime that was jailing others over far smaller matters.
Outcome / Status
The contents were never made public and no one was tried. The episode became a lasting symbol of the anti-corruption drive's double standard.
Administration's response
The regime declined to investigate its own; the customs officer who tried to inspect the bags was overruled.
