Election
Supreme Court sacks Omehia, declares Amaechi the valid PDP candidate
Govt Won
What the case is about
Amaechi won the PDP's 2007 governorship primary but was substituted for Celestine Omehia by the party shortly before the election, on the stated grounds of an 'error'; the resulting intra-party dispute reached the Supreme Court.
Ruling & compliance
The Supreme Court ruled on 25 October 2007 that Omehia's substitution for Amaechi was invalid, sacked Omehia after roughly six months as governor, and declared Amaechi the authentic PDP candidate and rightful winner of the April 2007 election.
Governance
Courts settle the tenure-computation dispute with Omehia
Govt Won
What the case is about
Omehia argued that his roughly six months in office before being sacked should not count toward Amaechi's four-year constitutional tenure, which would have extended Amaechi's term beyond May 2011.
Ruling & compliance
The Federal High Court ruled in 2010 that Omehia's time in office did form part of Amaechi's four-year tenure, meaning Amaechi's first term still ended on 29 May 2011; Omehia's later bid to get the Supreme Court to hear a further appeal against that ruling collapsed when the apex court dismissed his suit outright around February 2014.
