What the case is about
The PDP challenged Hyacinth Alia's victory in the March 2023 Benue State governorship election.
Ruling & compliance
The Governorship Election Petition Tribunal upheld Alia's victory, the Court of Appeal affirmed the tribunal's decision, and the Supreme Court dismissed the PDP's further appeal, affirming Alia as the duly elected governor at every level.
Election
Local government election petitions (23 chairmen)
Govt Won
What the case is about
Following the October 2024 local government elections, opposition parties (primarily the PDP) petitioned against APC victories; the Local Government Election Petition Tribunals initially nullified APC wins in nine of the state's 23 councils.
Ruling & compliance
The Appeal Panel overturned the tribunals' nullifications and upheld the election of all 23 APC local government chairmen, dismissing the opposition petitions for lack of merit and insufficient evidence.
Fiscal
Iorember & Akya v. Benue State Government (pension and gratuity arrears)
Govt Lost
What the case is about
Retirees Cletus Iorember and Donna Akya sued the Benue State Government over its withholding of their pensions and gratuities.
Ruling & compliance
Justice Isaac Essien declared the withholding unconstitutional and unlawful, ordering the state to pay ₦12,273,030.06 and ₦14,125,921.50 respectively in gratuity and pension arrears — one of several similar rulings against the state, including a separate order to pay retiree Ukari Terkula ₦5.3 million in gratuity and ₦2.7 million in pension.
Security
FRN v. Ardo Lawal Mohammed Dono & 8 Ors (Yelwata massacre terrorism charges)
Ongoing
What the case is about
Following the 13-14 June 2025 Yelwata massacre in Guma LGA, which killed an estimated 100-200 people, federal prosecutors charged nine men, led by Ardo Lawal Mohammed Dono, with terrorism offences, alleging they met repeatedly to plan the attack, raised funds, and recruited gunmen.
Ruling & compliance
The nine suspects were arraigned in February 2026; no verdict had been reached as of this update. This is a federal prosecution rather than Benue State Government litigation, but it represents the most significant accountability step yet taken over the massacre.
