Allegation
The Metropolitan Police arrested Alamieyeseigha in London in September 2005 after finding about £1 million in cash at his residence; the total identified rose to roughly £1.8 million plus four London properties worth about £10 million, alleged to have been bought with diverted Bayelsa funds.
Outcome / Status
He jumped bail in December 2005 and returned to Nigeria; the Bayelsa Assembly impeached him on 9 December 2005. On 26 July 2007 he pleaded guilty before a Nigerian court to six counts and received concurrent two-year terms; with time already served since 2005 he was released the next day. Asset forfeitures followed in the UK and US. President Goodluck Jonathan pardoned him on 12 March 2013, to public criticism. He died on 10 October 2015.
Administration's response
The EFCC prosecuted the case to a guilty plea, but the sentence and the later presidential pardon were widely seen as disproportionately lenient.
